UX Gets Budgeted and Staffed,
Either Inside or Outsourced
Companies are recognizing that UX is one of their highest ROI projects. So they're either building in-house teams or establishing long-term relationships with UX firms. Here’s the trade-off: consistently designing, validating and developing either new or existing solutions requires a team. The minimum size of a UX team for a multi-application organization is six: a UX Architect, a UX Usability Researcher, 2 UX Designers and 2 UI developers.

UX professionals are now sought after, expensive. Fully loaded cost of a 6-person team is $600K-900K per year. And to be effective, the team needs a proven user-centered UX methodology, a common UX design system and reusable UI code library. Putting in place a relationship with a UX design firm gets you part-time use of a team that already has all the tools it needs—all at a fraction of the cost of an in-house UX team.

Intelligent Experiences Appear
This will be the year in which artificial intelligence (functionality that mimics or optimizes human capability) enters the market. For many types of software, we’ll see the use of AI for decision support. This will cover financial transactions ranging from commercial loan underwriting to optimizing supply chain. AI services from Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Services will be the infrastructure to make this all possible.

Privacy By Design
With data breach debacles like Equifax and Uber and the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that goes into effect May 2018, privacy considerations and compliance must become part of the design process.

Not collecting more data than is necessary to complete an activity, and controlling of processing will become critical. The EU’s GDPR carries fines that will be as high as 4% of a company’s annual revenue. Is it a surprise that data privacy will need to start at design?

New, Broader Focus on the Overall Digital Experience
It won’t be enough to focus only on the UX of software. Digital Experience will need to be orchestrated at multiple touchpoints the user has with the company. Companies will want their users to have experiences like, "It’s awesome, I would never consider changing!". Not, "I was never able to get logged in".

Everything Will Be Responsive
Sorry, the introductory offer period is over. If you are delivering a software-based solution it will have to be responsive across a range of resolutions from large monitors on desktops, to notebooks and tablets. We believe smartphone functionality will continue to be a special case; it should only be the functionality that is high-value in a mobile setting.

Greater Data Visualization and Interaction
Data is king. It guides activities and decisions. The best solutions will offer more insight. This is an ongoing trend, but we think there will be acceleration in the year ahead as new tools become available.

User Validation via Rapid Prototyping
With the growth of tools like InVision and UXPin, teams will be able to create rapid, high fidelity prototypes to engage users in validating and refining designs.
